    Chief Schultz was appointed the fulltime Chief of Police in April of 2022 after serving as the Interim Chief. He began his career with the Athens Police Department in 2004 after serving with the McMinn County Sheriff’s Department. His law enforcement career began in the 1988. His experience has allowed him to serve in many leadership roles and allowed him to acquire numerous opportunities for specialized training. He is a native Athenian which only strengthens his desire to see that the Athens Police Department reaches its fullest potential so that citizens and visitors have the safest environment to live, work, worship, learn and play.

     Jason Garren began his law enforcement career in 1995 with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department.  He then went to the Tellico Plains Police Department in 1999 where he served as a patrolman, Sergeant, and Captain.  In 2003 he came to work for the Athens Police Department where he began as a patrolman.  He then was promoted to Senior Patrol Officer in 2004.  In 2007 he was promoted to Sergeant.  In 2014 he was promoted to Lieutenant and finally in 2018 he was promoted to Captain/ Deputy Chief.  Deputy Chief Garren assists the Chief of Police with the day-to-day operations of the police department and fills in during the Chief’s absence.  Deputy Chief Garren currently serves as the General Departmental Instructor, as well as the Terminal Agency Coordinator for the TBI.  Deputy Chief Garren holds numerous instructor certifications including firearms, Taser, de-escalation tactics, NCIC, Property Management, and was awarded the FBI-LEEDA Trilogy award in leadership training.

     Lieutenant Thomas began his career with the Athens Police Department in 1999 as a reserve officer.  In 2001 Lieutenant Thomas began his full time career and attended the police academy.  Throughout the years Lieutenant Thomas has worked as a patrol officer, senior patrol officer, patrol sergeant, patrol lieutenant, and is currently the administrative lieutenant over departmental training, the school resource officer program, directed patrol program, field training officer program, internal affairs, Tibrs reporting, quartermaster for the department, Chaplains program, as well as various other duties. Lieutenant Thomas holds numerous instructor certifications including EVOC ,firearms, patrol rifle, radar, taser, Glock, shotgun, rifle armorer, and has been the awarded the FBI-LEEDA trilogy award in leadership training. Lieutenant Thomas has enjoyed his years at the Athens Police Department and looks forward to many more years serving the citizens of this great city.
